Mores, Renaat

° Ronse, 12/12/1899 — † Aalst, 18/02/1997

Annelies Focquaert (translation: Jo Sneppe)

Renaat Mores graduated in the Greek-Latin section of St Anthony Grammar School in Ronse, where he had fallen in love with the organ thanks to his teacher Oscar Van Durme. In the local music school he was also privileged with exceptional teachers: director Karel De Sutter (harmony), Arthur De Hovre (organ) and Alfons Suys (piano). In 1925 he obtained at the Conservatory of Ghent prizes for organ (Flor Peeters), harmony, counterpoint, fugue and composition (with Martin Lunssens). Subsequently he also took lessons at the Conservatory of Brussels from director Léon Jongen. From 1925 to 1935 he was organist at Our Lady's Church in Dendermonde, where he was also teaching at the Grammar School and at the municipal Academy of Music.

In 1935 he became organist at St Martin's Church in Aalst, where he played the organ until 1972, while concurrently (for 45 years) he was piano and organ teacher at St Joseph Grammar School in Aalst. There he was the accompanist for the liturgy, the theatre as well as the school choir, for years also accompanying the local choir Cantate Domino. Upon his retirement he continued playing as an organist at plenty of churches and abbey churches, such as the Capuchin Church in Aalst and the Abbeys of Westmalle and Affligem. He himself claimed to have been an organist for seventy years.

His first compositions were published by Alfons Moortgat, in the latter's Geestelijke liederen (Sacred Songs), Kerkstemmen (Church Voices) and Voor het altaar (In Front of the Altar). His oeuvre mainly consists of sacred songs, masses, occasional cantatas and organ works, among them the Fuga per organo con coro from 1976, dedicated to his organ teacher Flor Peeters.
