Biografie
Jan Dewilde (translation: Jo Sneppe)
César Hinderdael studied with Edgar Tinel at the Lemmens Institute in Mechelen, where he obtained the degree for organ. Subsequently he continued his studies at the Conservatories of Ghent (organ, harmony, counterpoint and fugue) and Antwerp (double bass). One of his first compositions was Luim (Mirth), a piece for double bass that served as a set work at the Conservatory of Antwerp.
Before the First World War he played as contrabassist in the orchestras of the Classical Concerts and of the Flemish Opera.
At the outbreak of the war he fled to the Netherlands, where he settled down until his death. Initially he made do with odd jobs such as porter at the Pomona hotel in The Hague, until he passed an audition for double bass player at the city's Residence Orchestra.
In the Netherlands he conducted several choirs and published articles in various music periodicals. At the Caecilia School of Music in The Hague he was teacher of organ, harmony, counterpoint and fugue. He wrote the staff notations of all the melodies for the study of H. Hasper Het rhythme in den zang der gemeente bij den eeredienst der protestantsche kerken (The Rhythm of the Congregation Songs for Worship in Protestant Churches). In addition he harmonised 400 songs for mixed choirs.
Several songs of his were published in the series Nederlandsche Zangstukken (Dutch Singing Pieces) of the Willems Foundation and in the anthology Het Vlaamsche lied, Onze Vlaamsche liederenschat (The Flemish Song, Our Flemish Song Treasures) and Liederen voor ons volk (Songs for our People).
On a libretto of Lode Scheltjens he wrote the folkloric opera De Schabletter (The Rural Constable), which was created in the Royal Flemish Opera around Christmas 1931.
