Biografie
Jan Dewilde (translation: Joris Duytschaever)
At the Municipal Conservatory for Music of his native Bruges he graduated in solfège, harmony and organ. From 1900 on he pursued further studies at the Brussels Conservatory, earning diplomas in harmony (Gustave Huberti), organ (Alphonse Mailly) and counterpoint (Edgar Tinel). He also proved his mettle in practical harmony and fugue there, earning minor diplomas in those fields.
In Bruges Jooris was choir master at St Walburga's church, conductor of the 'Société de Musique' and teacher of solfège and harmony at the Municipal Conservatory for Music.
In 1907 he competed for the Prix de Rome, but his cantata Genoveva van Brabant was not successful. Furthermore he composed chamber music, orchestral works, cantatas, choirs and songs.
