Hullebroeck, Emiel

° Gentbrugge, 20/02/1878 — † Liedekerke, 28/03/1965

Karolien Selhorst after Jan Dewilde (translation: Joris Duytschaever)

Emiel Hullebroeck got his earliest music education as a chorister at St Anna's church in Ghent. He was taught Gregorian plainchant as well as the rudiments of music there. He pursued further studies at the Conservatory of Ghent with Oscar Roels (solfège), Paul Lebrun (harmony), Jozef Tilborghs (organ) and Adolphe Samuel (counterpoint, fugue, and composition).

After having earned his degree, he founded the Ghent A Capella Choir in 1899. With this excellent chamber choir he performed, besides work of Flemish colleagues such as Tinel, Waelput and Mestdagh, mainly early music (such as polyphonic music), a venture that was not self-evident in those days. Meantime Hullebroeck had started composing himself: several works for orchestra, the lyric drama Aleidis (1913), the oratorio Kunstvisioen (Vision of Art, 1913). However, he was going to be more widely acclaimed with his songs in the folk song tradition. In all he published 19 volumes, coming up to 144 songs. The first volume went through 17 impressions, the sixth boasted 22 impressions. Some of his songs were there to stay in the collective memory: Hij die geen liedje zingen kan (He who can't sing a song [should whistle one]), Tineke van Heule, De Blauwvoet (The Fulmar, a seabird representing the Flemish Movement), Moederke alleen (Mother's Lullaby), De wiegende mijnwerker (The Cradling Miner), Hemelhuis (Heavenly House), De gilde viert (The Guild Celebrates).

The enormous popularity of his songs can be explained by the combination of four factors: a melody that pleases the ear; a regular, but catchy rhythm; an uncomplicated strophic structure; and a simple, appealing text. His most important writers of lyrics were Lambrecht Lambrechts, René De Clercq, and Willem Gijssels. The limited compass of voice and the simple piano accompaniment made the songs also manageable for amateurs, resulting in big sales of the scores.

Between 1904 and 1934 Hullebroeck was responsible for more than two thousand songs evenings for socio-cultural organisations in Flanders and Holland. The successful formula consisted of an introduction by Hullebroeck, followed by collective singing. During the First World War Hullebroeck fled to neutral Holland, where he wrote several war songs in which he complained about the situation of Flemish soldiers at the front, such as De boeven van Fresnes (The Wretches of Fresnes), De verworpelingen van den Ijzer ( The Outcasts of the Yser), and De weezang van Auvours (The Lament of Auvours).

During a concert tour to Dutch India in 1915 Hullebroeck became enchanted by native Indonesian music and he adapted a number of indigenous songs. He reported on that journey in the book Ons mooi Insulinde. Reisindrukken (Our beautiful Insulind. Travel Memories.) Later he also undertook concert tours across South Africa (1920) and the United States (1923).

Between 1926 and 1934 Hullebroeck composed seven operettas. The most acclaimed among them were Sepp'l (libretto by Louis De Vriendt and Lambrechts; 1926) and Het meisje van Zaventem (The Girl of Zaventem, libretto by Henri Caspeele; 1934). Sepp'l was premiered in the 'Folies Bergères' in Brussels and reached more than 2,500 executions.

In addition to his talents as a composer Hullebroeck was also a gifted teacher. Thus he taught from 1902 to 1937 at the Teachers Training College in Ghent, and in 1912 he published his own method of solfège entitled Notenleer door het lied (Solfège through Song). In succession of Paul Gilson he was general inspector of music education from 1930 to September 1944.

In 1922 Hullebroeck founded with Jef Denyn the association 'Onze Beiaarden (Our Carillons) with a view to promoting the Flemish art of the carillon at home and abroad. In that same year he started the periodical Muziekwarande (Musical Pleasure Ground) with Lambrechts as editorial assistant. This conservative periodical appeared until 1931 and remains an important source of information for that period of Flemish music history. Also in 1922 Hullebroeck founded the 'Genootschap der Vlaamse componisten' (Association of Flemish Composers) to protect the rights of Flemish composers more adequately, with partners such as Lodewijk Mortelmans, Jef Van Hoof, and Arthur Wilford, among others. On the basis of that association he founded NAVEA, the 'Nationale Vereniging voor Auteursrechten' (National Association for Royalties), thus breaking the monopoly of the francophone copyright association SACEM. In 1945 NAVEA was transformed to SABAM.

Hullebroeck was also deeply entrenched in the Flemish Movement. He composed militant songs and conducted at several Flemish nationalistic song festivals, including those during the Second World War. From 1939 on he was also active in the Federation of Flemish Artists, an artistic cooperative that was supported by the Germans during the war. After the war Hullebroeck was indicted for cultural collaboration, but because he had discontinued all his activities as early as 1943, he was discharged by the Brussels Military Court on 5 August 1947. Even so, he was stripped of his civil rights forever, but only one year later this sentence was reduced to six years. In 1950 he was rehabilitated, and in 1952 he became honorary president of SABAM.

Emiel Hullebroeck played an important role in the Flemish Song Movement and in the pursuit of social protection for the artist. Even so, his conservative attitude interfered with innovative trends in music and was therefore counterproductive for the development of Flemish musical life.

Lieven Duvosel in Muziek-Warande

Emiel Hullebroeck

Karel Mestdagh

Emiel Hullebroeck

Emiel Hullebroeck

Mechelen viert deze maand het 35-jarig jubileum van zijn meesterlijke stadsbeiaardier, Jef Denijn, den machtigen kunstenaar-tovenaar, die sedert 1887 de klokken van den St. Romboutstoren zingen doet, en dit op zulk een voortreffelijke manier, dat zijn naam en die der Vlaamsche kunst, de oude en de nieuwe wereld door, met waardeering wordt uitgesproken; den noesten en vernuftigen wroeter, die klavieren en klokverbindingen tot een ongehoopte volmaking wist op te voeren, zoodat zijn stelsel alom met geestdrift werd aangenomen;

Mijn oud-leeraar Tilborghs

Emiel Hullebroeck
