Biografie

Nuyts, Jozef

by Jan Dewilde

Jozef Nuyts was the first assistant priest of the Turnhout parish Church of Our Lady Mediator, established in 1928. That same year he founded a male-voice choir followed a year later by a female choir to grace the Maytime ecclesiastical rites.

He wrote compositions for both choirs. Only a few of them were published on his own, such as Naar Scherpenheuvel (Towards Scherpenheuvel, a Flemish place of pilgrimage venerating the Blessed Mary). This work was composed for four-part mixed choir "on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Turnhout Procession Brotherhood, 1812-1937".

Nuyts also collected and explored folksongs.
