Pape, Gustaaf

° Aalst, 15/05/1857 — † Aalst, 20/12/1920

  • Bergmans, C.: Le conservatoire royal de musique de Gand, Gent, 1901, p. 480.

It was only after his graduation in the field of land surveying that Pape, at the age of 20, enrolled at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent. There he was taught by Adolf D'Hulst and Adolphe Samuel. Because of his age he did not qualify for exams, nor was he allowed to compete for the Prix de Rome.

In addition to a lot of occasional music he also wrote a Passiespel (Passion Play, performed even in Genève), the mystery play De Hemelkoningin (The Queen of Heaven) and Toneelmuziek bij Iwein van Aalst (Stage Music for Iwein van Aalst), a historical drama by Bauwens.

In Aalst several cantatas by Benoit, Tinel, Andelhof, Roels and Gilson were performed under his baton. There he was not only director of the music school, but also founded Song Evenings for the people, composing the songs himself.
