Brouw, Frans

° Veurne, 31/01/1929 — † Québec (Canada), 8/07/2025

Hendrik Vanden Abeele

Frans Brouw was a Flemish pianist, born in Veurne, and at the time of his death the oldest Belgian laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. In 1952, at the age of 23, he was awarded fourth prize in the piano competition, a distinction that helped shape the course of his subsequent career. In the final he performed, among other works, Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto; according to later recollections, he experienced an exceptionally strong sense of communication with both orchestra and audience in the second movement.

Brouw received his first musical training from his father and later studied at the Brussels Conservatory. Despite his success in the competition, his career in Belgium developed with some difficulty, partly due to his military service and limited professional opportunities. In the 1960s he moved with his family to Quebec (Canada), where he established a sustained career as a concert pianist and university teacher. He acquired Canadian nationality in 1974.

Alongside his international performing career, Brouw also served three times as a jury member of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. He was made an honorary citizen of both Veurne and Izegem. His repertoire included works by Schumann, Mozart, Brahms and Rachmaninov. He died on 8 July 2025 in Canada, aged 96.
