De Pillecyn, Jurgen
Biografie
Jurgen De Pillecyn initially devoted himself to various aspects of classical music at the academies of Hamme and Leuven, after which he went on to study musicology at KU Leuven. He graduated in 1986 with highest distinction. His final dissertation examined the influence of Schumann on Brahms. At the same time, he began studies in music theory and composition at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he immersed himself in counterpoint, fugue, orchestration, and analysis. In 2000, he obtained his final diploma in composition there under Rafaël D’Haene, once again with highest distinction. Since 1989, he has been a lecturer at the same conservatory and is also active as a teacher in Schaerbeek. He has written commissioned works for, among others, Axion Classics and the International Saxophone Competition of Dinant, and he is a member of the Robert Schumann Gesellschaft.
His oeuvre aligns with the classical tradition: conventional instrumentations, thematic thinking, and traditional notation. Yet his harmonic language is ‘freely atonal’, influenced by Szymanowski and Dutilleux, with a preference for lyrical turns of phrase. Counterpoint plays an important role, alongside literary inspiration, with atmosphere and character often shaping the musical development. His literary interests were further nourished by a familial connection to the Flemish writer Filip De Pillecyn (1891–1962).
