Devreese, Frédéric

° Amsterdam, 2/06/1929 — † Brussel, 28/09/2020

Frédéric Devreese was a composer, conductor and prominent figure in Belgian music and cinema. He grew up in a distinctly musical family: his father, Godfried Devreese, was a composer, conductor and violinist, while his mother also played the violin. After receiving his first lessons from his father, he studied with Marcel Poot and René Defossez at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He continued his training with Ildebrando Pizzetti and Fernando Previtali in Rome, and with Hans Swarowsky in Vienna.

His breakthrough came early: in 1949, his First Piano Concerto won the composition prize at the Ostend International Piano Competition. He later worked for the Belgian public broadcaster BRT, initially as a television director and subsequently as a conductor and producer. This environment brought him into close contact with film and television and proved decisive in his development as a film composer. Devreese wrote scores for films by directors including André Delvaux, Marion Hänsel, Hugo Claus, Yves Hanchar and Lieven Debrauwer. His film music often stood on its own: evocative and clearly structured, it lent itself readily to adaptation for the concert hall.

His wide-ranging output includes piano concertos, a violin concerto, a cello concerto, operas, ballet music, chamber music, vocal works and numerous film scores. His musical language combined accessibility with modern techniques. He retained tonal points of reference while enriching them with atonal elements, jazz influences, rhythmic incisiveness and a preference for short, recognisable motifs. Echoes of Gershwin can sometimes be heard in his piano concertos, while his later works reveal a more balanced idiom and greater expressive depth. Devreese was also a committed advocate for young musical talent, notably through Tenuto, Jong Tenuto and Procemus. He received numerous honours, including the Prix Italia, Plateau Awards, the Georges Delerue Award and the Klara Lifetime Achievement Award.
