Biografie

Initially Frans D'Haeyer studied at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Antwerp with Alpaerts (solfège) and Tillemans (violin), but subsequently he decided to become a teacher. He studied at the state Teacher Training College in Ghent and taught in the Antwerp city school system between 1910 and 1926, but concurrently took private classes with Karel Candael (harmony, counterpoint and fugue) and Paul Gilson (theory of musical forms and orchestration). In 1915 and 1919 he competed for the Prix de Rome, unsuccessfully however.
After serving for 15 years in the communal education system of Antwerp, he graduated to the position of director at the music school of Hoboken, a suburb in the Greater Antwerp Area, where for several decades he energized cultural life. Also as conductor of the male choir "Lassallekring", where he succeeded in 1936 to his mentor and friend Karel Candael, he stimulated local music life in Antwerp. In 1948 he was interim professor of harmony at the Antwerp Conservatory.
As a composer D'Haeyer was very versatile. He composed symphonic music and chamber music as well as works for harmony and choir. He was a competent professional with a romantic idiom, coloured with impressionist touches here and there, showing a predilection for melody.
