D'hoe, Jeroen

° Leuven, 25/06/1968

Jeroen D’hoe is a versatile composer, pianist and musicologist who actively explores dialogues between contemporary classical music and ‘lighter’ musical styles. He studied musicology at KU Leuven, combining this with training in composition and piano. His further studies took him to The Juilliard School in New York, where he obtained both a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition under John Corigliano. In 1998, he received a scholarship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation to support these studies.

D’hoe’s musical language combines a strong connection with tradition and the great symphonic repertoire with contemporary techniques and a pronounced sense of expressivity. His background in musicology plays a crucial role in this respect: analytical, historical and aesthetic thinking provide, for him, an essential foundation for artistic creation. He has written numerous works on commission for orchestras, ensembles, festivals and cultural institutions, including Wavechain, Violin Concerto, Festival Anthem and, more recently, Levitations (2024).

His distinctions include the Queen Elisabeth National Composition Competition, the SABAM Prize for Composition and the Gouden Klaproos for his body of work. Alongside his activities as a composer, D’hoe is active as a teacher and researcher, and regularly collaborates with musicians from the worlds of classical music, jazz and pop. His music consistently seeks a balance between structural clarity, technical refinement and emotional communication with the audience.
