Duijck, Johan

° Gummersbach (DE), 23/11/1954

Johan Duijck is a pianist, composer, choral conductor and pedagogue. He is the son of composer and conductor Guy Duijck, and received a broad musical education at the conservatoires of Ghent and Brussels, studying piano with Robert Steyaert and composition with Peter Cabus, among others. He later continued his training at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, with Stanislas Neuhaus in Moscow and with László Heltay in London. As a performer, Duijck is active as a concert pianist and chamber musician, including as a member of the Hans Memling Trio. He gained international recognition above all as a choral conductor. For many years he was chief conductor of the Flemish Radio Choir, and he also directed the Ghent Madrigal Choir, the European Youth Choir and the choir of the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields in London. In addition, he has regularly been invited as a guest conductor by choirs and orchestras in Europe and beyond. As a composer, Duijck focuses mainly on piano and choral music. His music is clear in form, melodically fluent and contrapuntally refined. In his choral works, the relationship between word and music is central; his piano works often also have a pedagogical dimension.
