Goethals, Lucien

° Gent, 26/06/1931 — † Gent, 12/12/2006

Lucien Goethals was a Flemish composer and a pioneer of electronic music, alongside Karel Goeyvaerts and Louis De Meester. He grew up in Buenos Aires, where he studied at the Dima Conservatory. After returning from Argentina after 1946, he continued his training at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, earning several first prizes. Initially influenced by neoclassicism, he developed into a prominent exponent of serialism and electronic music. His Música Dodecafónica(1959) marked his transition to twelve-tone composition; he later experimented with aleatoric techniques and the integration of tape and instrumental sounds (Diálogos, Cellotape).

From 1963, he worked as a producer and composer at IPEM in Ghent, helping to establish it as an international centre for electronic music. He combined his compositional work with teaching musical analysis at the Ghent Conservatory. His output, comprising hundreds of works, evolved from strictly serial structures towards a more poetic, introspective musical language, often reflecting Spanish influences (Tres Paisajes Sonoros, Pampa, Espacios y tiempos). His final work, Al Amin Dada (2006), revisits the spirit of his experimental period. The recipient of numerous awards, Goethals remains a key figure in the development of electronic music in Belgium and its connections with the Western European avant-garde.
