Pauwels, Dominique

° Brugge, 5/03/1961

Dominique Pauwels is a Flemish composer who studied at the conservatories of Ghent and Amsterdam, at IRCAM in Paris, and at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he graduated magna cum laude in composition and film scoring. He is one of the few Flemish composers able to make a full living from his music, partly thanks to his work for television programmes such as The Island, De Mol, and De Slimste Mens. Since 2004, he has been composer-in-residence at LOD music theatre, where he has collaborated with, among others, Karine Ponties, Guy Cassiers, Inne Goris, and Fabrice Murgia. Pauwels distinguishes between functional music for television, theatre, and advertising, and non-functional music such as piano works, a string quartet with electronics, or algorithmic compositions. His music consistently stems from a search for essence, placing timbre at its core, often through a confrontation between traditional instrumental sound colours and electronic sounds. He also uses silence and spatialisation as compositional devices, and combines fast tempi and ostinati with dance-like melodies. Pauwels is known for his experimental approach and innovative projects, such as The Ark, a thirty-year compositional process (‘the musical realisation is carried out by a piano placed in an aquarium and connected to a computer’), as well as for his ability to fuse traditional forms and new technologies into a coherent and expressive musical language.
