At the age of twenty-four Van Eyck became conductor of the Turnhout Orpheus circle, comprising a band, a choir and a symphonic orchestra. This association was founded in 1863 after the merging of the so-called "Harmonie van Turnhout" and the St. Cecilia concert band. For these ensembles Van Eyck wrote a substantial amount of compositions. Yet only one work of his has been preserved in print, i.e. Mijn laatste hoop (My Ultimate Hope), a song on a text of Th. Van Ravensteyn, published in Baarle-Hertog in 1881 by Charles de Paeux.
Jan Van Eyck was very active in the local music life. As a teacher at the Turnhout music school he trained hundreds of pupils.
