Vande Ginste, Stephane

° Kisangani (CG), 7/01/1971

Stephane Vande Ginste is a pianist, composer and chamber musician. He studied at the Municipal Conservatoire in Kortrijk and subsequently at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels, where he studied piano, harmony, counterpoint and composition, with teachers including André Laporte. He also attended masterclasses with Daniel Capelletti, Garrett List and Frederic Rzewski. During the 1990s, he received several awards, winning the Young Composers’ Competition three times, as well as the Muizelhuis Prize, the DMP Prize and the Cantabile Prize.

His output is varied and resists easy categorisation. His early works reveal the influence of Webern, Kurtág and Ligeti, with an emphasis on short forms, subtle dynamics, the interplay of registers and metrical tension. There is also a strong connection with jazz and blues, evident in works such as Blue for Two, On the Road and Variations on Bluesette. Literature likewise plays an important role, with settings of texts by T.S. Eliot and Paul van Ostaijen. A substantial part of his output consists of educational music and compositions for young performers, through which he seeks to make contemporary musical language accessible.
