Verbraeken, Carl

° Wilrijk, 18/09/1950

Carl Verbraeken is a pianist, composer, educator and engineer. Alongside his scientific training, he pursued a broad musical education, studying piano with Simone Mortelmans-Coolen, Jos Van Immerseel, Jean Brouwers and Robert Steyaert, among others, and composition with Edward Goyvaerts and Peter Cabus. He obtained the Higher Diploma in piano and, through courses and international contacts, also encountered figures such as Iannis Xenakis, Brian Ferneyhough and Henri Dutilleux.

As a composer, Verbraeken evolved from works grounded in technical and theoretical principles, including serial procedures and conceptual systems of his own, towards a more direct, intuitive style. He seeks to keep the distance between conception and perception as small as possible. His output consists primarily of piano and chamber music, often for small ensembles. Well-known series include Bloemenstukken, Ruyterliederen and Oud-Brusselse Taferelen. These works are characterised by clear melodies, regular accompaniment patterns, a rhythmic pulse and an often unequivocally tonal character. Verbraeken has also been active as a teacher, director and board member, notably with the Union of Belgian Composers and the Music Council of Flanders.
