Coppens, Claude Albert

° Schaarbeek, 23/12/1936

Claude Coppens is a pianist and composer whose development was shaped by a broad musical and cultural environment. He grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at an early age. At the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels, he won first prizes in solfège and piano while still very young. Alongside his musical training, he studied law at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), not, by his own account, with a view to pursuing a legal career, but out of a strong desire to broaden his intellectual and cultural horizons.

Between 1951 and 1960, Coppens continued his studies in Paris with Jacques Février and Marguerite Long. There he immersed himself in the French piano tradition and developed a lasting affinity with composers including Satie, Fauré and Poulenc. During the same period, he was a prizewinner at international piano competitions in Paris, Brussels and Rio de Janeiro, where he performed Villa-Lobos’s piano concerto, which had been dedicated to him. Expo 58 marked an artistic turning point: there Coppens encountered the international avant-garde, an experience that profoundly broadened his musical outlook.

From 1962 onwards, he was associated with the Ghent Conservatoire, where he consistently championed the place of contemporary music in both teaching and performance. As a composer, he developed an individual body of work in which literature, mathematical structures, social reflection and a keen sense of sound and time converge, driven throughout by the principle of a permanent interaction between evolution and revolution.
