De Clerck, Patrick
Biografie
Patrick De Clerck began composing as a self-taught musician and worked at leading centres for electronic music, including IPEM in Ghent and IRCAM in Paris. While still young, he distanced himself radically from the avant-garde, which he regarded as too self-absorbed. After exploring popular music and alternative rock, he returned to composition in the mid-1980s, partly through collaborations with the Italian dance company Sosta Palmizi. The chamber opera Re (1988–1989) marked his definitive return as a composer.
De Clerck developed a distinctive neo-tonal language, built from a tabula rasa principle and characterised by transparency, emotional directness and considerable interpretative freedom for performers. His works have been performed by ensembles and musicians such as the Danel Quartet and Patricia Kopatchinskaya.
Alongside his work as a composer, he has pursued an exceptional career as a cultural entrepreneur. He has headed major festivals and concert series including KlaraFestival, European Gala Concerts and Ars Musica, where, by his own account, both audience figures and budgets doubled. As curator of New Horizons at the Mariinsky Theatre and founder of Music Projects For Brussels, he developed new audience strategies and large-scale international projects. Since 2002, he has also served as general manager of the Megadisc Classics label. As De Clerck himself puts it rather aptly: he once composed music; today, he composes audiences.
