° Antwerpen, 18/05/1791 — † Schaarbeek, 25/04/1866

Annelies Focquaert (translation: Jo Sneppe)

As a child he took lessons with the Antwerp organist-carilloneurs Franciscus Josephus De Trazegnies and Joannes Hoefnagels. In 1809 he went to Paris, where he was accepted in the Conservatoire to follow piano classes with Adolphe Adam and harmony classes with François-Louis Perne, with whom he obtained the first prize in 1813. Subsequently he studied composition with François-Joseph Gossec. In 1818 he returned to Antwerp, where he became a music teacher, but in 1826 he left for the United States, where he performed in several major cities (among them New York, Boston, Philadelphia) and where he became the accompanist of Maria Malibran. Back in Europe he stayed in Paris for several years, relocating to Antwerp in 1855 and becoming there one of the founding members of the 'Société de l'Harmonie'. In France he published several compositions for piano, such as concertos, sonatas and airs variés.
