Biografie

In 1899 Cyriel Dubuisson became laureate for clarinet at the Municipal Music Academy of his native town Ostend, where he also studied harmony with director Léon Rinskopf. Subsequently Grégoire Jooris prepared him for advanced music education. At the Conservatoire of Brussels in 1901 he obtained a first 'accessit' for solfège and a second prize for clarinet, in 1902 a first prize for sight-reading. Upon the foundation of the Ostend Royal Vanneste Society in 1905 he directed the vocal music branch, presumably until the beginning of World War I, while at that time he was also engaged as conductor of the Blankenberge men's choral society 'Kring der XX'.
From 1906 to 1914 he was soloist-clarinettist at the Kursaal Orchestra in Ostend, frequently performing in chamber music ensembles as well. He also played in the Casino Orchestra of Blankenberge and gave performances in Germany, where he studied counterpoint with Ludwig Thuille and fugue with Cyrill Kistler. Furthermore he stayed in Zurich for three years, playing there with renowned conductors and getting the privilege to conduct himself the orchestra of the Tonhalle. From 1910 to 1918 he was teacher of solfège, saxophone and clarinet at the Municipal Music Academy in Ostend. After the First World War he was appointed as clarinettist by the French Opera in Antwerp. Later he returned to Blankenberge as a member of the Kursaal Orchestra as well as music teacher in the public secondary school and in an elementary school, where he developed a music pedagogical project to boot.
Dubuisson composed songs on texts by Frans de Cort, Willem Gijssels and Felix Timmermans, amongst others, as well as a music drama Duinroosje (Little Scotch Rose), the cantata Oorlogsklokken-Kerstlied (War Bells-Christmas Carol) and some children's cantatas: Het Badseizoen, Heilgroet, De Kindervriend (The Bathing Season, Salvation Greeting, Children's Friend); an oratorio De jaargetijen des levens (Life's Seasons), and instrumental work such as the symphonic poems Natuurindrukken (Impressions of Nature) and Weemoed en Nood (Melancholy and Woe). Some of his songs have been published in series like Het Vlaamsche Lied and by De Ring.

Cyriel Dubuisson in Muziek-Warande
C. Dubuisson, geboren te Oostende, draagt een Franschen naam, omdat zijn familie afkomstig is uit den zoogenaamden “Westhoek” van Noord-Frankrijk, waarschijnlijk van rond Duinkerken. Een Fransch type kan ik nochtans niet in hem herkennen.
Een Dappere
In het hart van juli heeft C. Dubuisson de uitvoering van drie kindercantaten te Blankenberge geleid, waarvan hij er twee zelf gecomponeerd had. Hij heeft veel gezweet voor de Kunst en het Vaderland!
