D'Haene, Rafaël

° Gullegem, 29/09/1943

Rafaël D’Haene grew up in a strongly musical environment: his father conducted brass and wind bands, and from an early age D’Haene himself played soprano saxophone in a wind orchestra. At the Kortrijk Conservatoire he switched to the piano and soon developed the ambition to become a composer. His studies took him to Brussels, where he studied piano, harmony, counterpoint and fugue with, among others, Eduardo del Pueyo, Jean Louël, Marcel Quinet and Victor Legley. In 1968, under the supervision of Henri Dutilleux, he obtained a licence de composition in Paris, followed by further studies in composition at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, from which he graduated in 1971.

From 1970 onwards, D’Haene taught harmony, counterpoint, fugue and composition for many years at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels, and from 1985 also taught musical analysis at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. His work received both national and international recognition, including the Lili Boulanger Prize (1977) and the SABAM Prize for Serious Music (1989).

Aesthetically, D’Haene positioned himself in opposition to the experimental avant-garde. His music is rooted in the classical tradition and in a nineteenth-century ideal of beauty, with counterpoint at the heart of his personal musical language. From restrained basic material, he constructs tightly knit, clearly structured compositions in which musical logic and expressive intensity are paramount. D’Haene does not pursue innovation for its own sake, but rather timelessness: music intended to retain its significance regardless of changing fashions.
