De Vocht, Lodewijk

° Antwerpen, 21/09/1887 — † 's Gravenwezel, 27/03/1977

Jan Dewilde (translation: Jo Sneppe)

Lodewijk De Vocht received his musical education from Emile Wambach in the Antwerp Cathedral Choir and from Jan Bacot (violin), Frans Lenaerts (piano), Lodewijk Mortelmans (harmony, counterpoint and fugue) and again Wambach (orchestration and composition) at the Antwerp Royal Flemish Conservatory.

De Vocht later returned to the Conservatory, initially as a teacher, subsequently as the director. Starting in 1921 he succeeded Edward Verheyden as teacher of harmony. Among his students he counted Daniël Sternefeld, Jef Maes and André Cluytens. Four years later he was in charge of the orchestra class. In 1933 he stood up for the succession of Lodewijk Mortelmans as the director, but his rival candidate Flor Alpaerts got the appointment. Eight years later he applied again, yet again he was rejected, this time in favour of Jef Van Hoof. Eventually, in difficult circumstances, he got the position of Conservatory director on 12 December 1944 and kept it until his retirement in 1952.

As an educator De Vocht was also active in the Antwerp "Muzikale Jeugd" (Musical Youth, later Jeugd en Muziek/ Youth and Music) and from 1939 to 1943 he was director of the Music Chapel of Queen Elisabeth.

Already at the age of sixteen De Vocht wrote his first compositions: choral works, songs and the cantata Groeninghe (site of the Battle of the Spurs). He would for the most part continue to compose vocal music, although early in his career he composed some brisk symphonic poems like Dageraad (Dawn, 1907) and In Ballingschap (In Exile, 1915), and well on in years he also wrote concerts for violin (1944), cello (1955) and recorder (1957).

His most original compositions were written for choir: choral studies and choral symphonies full of virtuosity and sometimes without words, such as Grote Symfonie (Great Symphony) for mixed voices and orchestra (1932) and Vier (Four) Studies for mixed voices. Again for choir he composed sacred music and cantatas as well: Lofzang aan Antwerpen (Ode to Antwerp); Volkenhulde (Peoples Homage, for the 1930 World Exhibition); Scaldis Aeterna (1966) and the lyrical drama Primavera (1962-1967). Furthermore he wrote songs on texts by Gezelle, Simons, Cuppens, Peleman and many others, chamber music (Trio for Woodwinds, 1955) and solo pieces for piano and guitar.

Besides his activities as a composer De Vocht concurrently pursued a career as a conductor. As a violinist in the orchestra of the 'Maatschappij der Nieuwe Concerten' (New Concerts Society) he had worked under the baton of great masters such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Hans Richter and Felix Weingartner. In 1913 he succeeded Wambach as choirmaster of the Antwerp Cathedral. In 1915 he became the conductor of the female choir of Constance Teichmann and Amanda Schnitzler-Selb, which he expanded a year later to the mixed choir Chorale Caecilia. In 1921 he replaced Lodewijk Mortelmans as the conductor of the 'Nieuwe Concerten', and in 1935 he became the conductor of the Antwerp Conservatory concerts.

With the Chorale Caecilia he annually performed the Matthäus Passion and together with the orchestra of the 'Nieuwe Concerten' he broke new ground with performances of Milhaud's Les Euménides and Honegger's Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher, two composers indeed who he closely co-operated with. Counting some forty presentations of Jeanne d'Arc, even in Paris and at the 1946 and 1947 Holland Festivals, he became the main advocate of this work. In 1943 he recorded it for His Master's Voice and in 1960 he conducted the work in a direct Eurovision broadcast.

What's remarkable in Lodewijk De Vocht is the dichotomy between the conductor of modern scores (Honegger, Milhaud, Stravinsky, Bartok) on the one hand, and the composer of lyrical-romantic works on the other.

Lodewijk De Vocht en de liturgische muziek

Vic Nees

Karel Albert

Paul Collaer over De Vocht
